12/09/2003 (Agence Europe) - At an informal meeting, the Dutch and Belgian governments have confirmed their desire not to unravel the Convention's work. Both myself and my Dutch colleague Atzo Nicolai support a political IGC restricted to ministerial level without any technical groups and which doesn't challenge the consensus struck at the Convention, said Belgian European minister Jacques Simonet. The Dutch do not appear as confidence as the Belgians about the aim of concluding the IGC under the Italian Presidency. They will be meeting again, this time along with Luxembourg, on 2 October, ahead of the opening of the IGC. And will hold as many other meetings as prove necessary. Simonet said it was important that Benelux keeps its role as a hinge between big and small countries, old and new.
