Turkey wishes to join a secular Europe, says Mr Erdogan - Mr Schröder supports Turkey's application

Brussels, 03/09/2003 (Agence Europe) - In an interview with La Repubblica prior to his meeting with Silvio Berlusconi in Rome on Saturday and Sunday, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed his hopes that the future European Constitution will not contain references to Christian values. "Religion should not come into the Constitution, because secularism has always been one of the driving forces behind the continent's development", he told the Italian daily newspaper.
