Brussels, 06/08/2003 (Agence Europe) - The Commission has added two small beetles, Aethina Tumida and Tropilaelaps, to the list of pathogens and diseases that must be systematically notified with a view to preventing them spreading across the EU. The two tropical parasites are capable of destroying whole swarms of bees. To prevent them appearing in Europe, bee imports will now be restricted to queen bees and all bee-keeping equipment will have to be specially treated.
