Brussels, 07/07/2003 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission has authorised the creation of a joint undertaking between Arcelor and Umicore. The latter is a Belgian company active in the markets for non-ferrous metals, ferro-alloys and related products. Part of the activities are carried out by its subsidiaries Sogem SA, UMS France and UMS Iberica. Arcelor, a multinational that is active in production and distribution of steel products as well as products for the steel industry, is also active in the production and distribution of non-ferrous metals, ferro-alloys and certain minerals through its subsidiaries Considar Inc and Considar Europe. The joint venture, called Duology, will group certain activities of Arcelor and Umicore's subsidiaries, Consiar and Sogem. The Commission has only noted very small overlaps between the two companies' activities, but which are not enough to create or strengthen a dominant position.
