Naples, 07/07/2003 (Agence Europe) - Italy, France, Spain, Portugal and Greece signed, on Saturday, on the fringe of the informal meeting on transport, a joint declaration aimed at developing maritime corridors for decongesting road and rail traffic, mainly in the Alps and Pyrenees. The declaration - "an initiative for regional cooperation aimed at developing cabotage in southern Europe" - stresses the role that maritime cabotage can play to this end. The five co-signatory Member States aim to fully integrate the maritime transport method in TEN-T and to focus their effort to ensure: - a high quality service founded on frequent and reliable supply; - financial cooperation between the public and private sectors in order to promote initiatives by developing infrastructure for sea corridors, mainly by setting up new regular routes for cabotage in order to promote intermodality.
