THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/terrorism

26/06/2003 (Agence Europe) - Just when (on Wednesday) US President, George W Bush was calling on Europe to act "rapidly and decisively against terrorist groups such as Hamas to deprive them of their funds", the Committee of Permanent Representatives of the Member States to the EU (Coreper) and ambassadors of the ten accession countries were debating the issue, at the request of the United Kingdom, without, nevertheless, deciding anything. "The majority of Member States are in favour of including the political wing on the list (organisations considered as terrorist by the EU: the armed wing of Hamas is already on it, Editor's note), but a large Member State (France: Editor's note) is against", declared Emma Udwin on Thursday, the spokesperson for the European Commissioner for external relations, Chris Patten.
