Brussels, 26/06/2003 (Agence Europe) - In a press release published on 26 June, the UCP (United Cyprus Party) stresses how urgent it is to find a solution to reuniting the island before it joins the EU in May 2004. The party stresses that the Annan Plan is a good base for a balanced settlement and welcomes the fact that Mr Papadopoulos, who was recently elected President of the Republic of Cyprus, had expressed his willingness to negotiate on the basis of this plan. The UCP considers that the Turkish leaders in Ankara have given up the language of chauvinism and appear to have adopted the European approach of dialogue and compromise. He notes, however, that the leader of the northern part of the island, Rauf Denktash, remains faithful to his hard line with the support of the military establishment. The UCP calls on Cyprus, Turkey and "Greece in the EU" to approach the Cyprus problem in the light of the EU values of peaceful coexistence, dialogue, tolerance, respect of difference, solidarity, compromise, the defence and pursuit of individual rights, social justice and economic prosperity. He assures Mr Papadopoulos of his support for any effort made to resolve the issue of Cyprus on the basis of these values and concludes that, now that the "wall of separation (Ed.: between the two communities) has cracked … it has to be demolished".
