25/06/2003 (Agence Europe) - In Copenhagen, where he is attending a study day organised by the European Parliament's EPP-ED group, CSU MEP Ingo Friedrich warned that the process of enlarging the EU had to be slowed down after the “fair and unprecedented” accession of the next ten Member States. In a press release, he argues that the draft European Convention already sets clear, if indirect, limits to the European Union in the future since it foresees a new type of integration of non-EU Member States which doesn't go as far as accession. countries with which the EU could sign special agreements of this nature include the Ukraine, Byelorussia and Turkey, said Friedrich (but Turkey is an applicant for accession, Ed). Friedrich said the Copenhagen criteria for enlargement should be amended to make it clear that the EU has to be able to manage future enlargements. The Bavarian MEP warned that there is little popular support for further enlargement, warning that if the destination of the European train was not clearly set, it would not be possible to get EU citizens on board.
