Graefe zu Baringdorf calls for codecision

Brussels, 25/06/2003 (Agence Europe) - Before the new Agricultural Council session to negotiate reform of the CAP, in a press release German Green Friedrich Wilhelm Grafe zu Baringdorf says the European Commission has presented a package which overall offers future prospects for farm policy post-enlargement. Member States willing to reform, including Germany, have taken it up, and the European Parliament has worked out a feasible compromise, yet the Agriculture Council has to postpone its decision yet again and, by threatening to veto it, France is blocking vitally important reforms in the interests of the agri-industry. The former Chair of the EP's Agriculture Committee said that to get out of this dead-end, codecision was required for farming and he called on the Convention to pull its socks up over CAP during the July plenaries.
