Rome, 24/06/2003 (Agence Europe) - MEP Mario Segni (from the Patto Segni list), together with former Defence Minister Carlo Scognamiglio, on 21 June founded the "Patto-Partito dei liberaldemocratici", which, according to a press release, aims to unite "the part of Italy which has no voice, which is neither on the left, nor in the House of Liberties" of Silvio Berlusconi. Europe is a priority for the new party, whose logo uses the twelve stars of the European Union. Talking of his father, the former President of the Republic, at the founding ceremony, Mr Segni said that "the political unification which was the real objective of those who made the Treaty is still a long way off". Faced with a government which has proclaimed itself the heir of De Gasperi, but considers Europe an option, and wants to "annex Russia and Israel", the new party will work towards a Europe which is capable of progress due to the impetus of the six founding countries, says a press release.
Mario Segni's initiative was launched by Internet, and has attracted 16,000 members in six months, including many young people.
