Brussels, 24/06/2003 (Agence Europe) - On the eve of the Trans-Atlantic Summit in Washington, the European Round Table of Industrialists (ERT) and the US Business Round Table (BRT) are calling on European and US leaders to "actively demonstrate their common commitment to keep trade negotiations on track". Representatives from international and multinational firms on both sides of the Atlantic have written that, "We hope that you take advantage of this summit for recreating the spirit of multilateral cooperation on trade issue, which proved so beneficial for the world in the past". They are seriously worried that: there will be an inability to reach consensus before the Ministerial conference bringing together WTO members at Cancun in less than three months' time, which risks overturning the process just when world economic growth is in urgent need of crucial boosts, they warn. They also insist that, "If the USA and the Union do not prove that they share the same commitment, we are afraid that chances to make significant progress will be lost". In a collective appeal to President Bush, President Prodi of the Commission, as well as other European leaders such as Javier Solana, Pascal Lamy, the Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis, President of the European Council, they stress that concrete action on the trade liberalisation programme for agricultural trade, firm commitments on the elimination of tariffs and the liberalisation of services are "essential for the success of the Doha Agenda".
