THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/convention/epp

16/06/2003 (Agence Europe) - "From the point of view of the EPP, we have achieved a lot. Our EPP Group in the Convention with Elmar Brok as Chairman was definitely the most active political grouping in the Convention. When we look back to Nice, we can clearly say that we achieved a far better result then in any of the last Intergovernmental Conferences. This result has to be preserved and defended. The IGC has to accept the result of the Convention". This is the comment by Wilfried Martens, President of the European People's Party, to the draft Constitution presented on Friday last by the Convention. In his view, many requests of the EPP have been included in the text, including the election of the president of the European Commission by the EP, taking into account the result of European elections, as proposed by the EPP Congress in October 2002 in Estoril.
