Luxembourg, 16/06/2003 (Agence Europe) - In its conclusions on Myanmar, adopted on Monday in Luxembourg, the External Relations Council calls for the immediate release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and of the other members of the National League for Democracy (LND), as well as for the offices of the LND and the universities to be opened. The Council encourages the ASEAN countries and their main partners, mainly China, India and Japan, to use their influence to actively promote the necessary political change in Burma. Given the serious deterioration in the situation over recent weeks, the Council has decided to immediately apply the sanctions that it had adopted in the context of its common position of 28 April. Implementation of such sanction s (extension of the visa ban and freeze of assets in particular) had, however, been suspended until 29 October.
