THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/convention

During its session on the finalisation of the draft treaty, the presidium also discussed economic governance.

Brussels, 23/05/2003 (Agence Europe) - At its 3-day meeting in Brussels aimed at finalising a full (but not full in the "policies" section) draft treaty for presentation to the plenary session of 30th and 31st May, the presidium of the European Convention also debated the matter of economic governance, including the role of the European Commission in the excessive deficit procedure provided for by the Stability and Growth Pact. According to the Greek press agency ANA, President of the EU Council George Papandreou, a member of the Convention, indicated that the debate had confirmed differences regarding the representation of the euro zone at international level, due in particular to British reluctance, but that a compromise solution might be the taking of a decision by reinforced majority on the measures proposed by the Union in international forums. "It is imperative that we are coordinated, and perhaps one day we will also have a unified representation on foreign policy questions, at the United Nations, for example", ANA quoted the Greek Foreign Affairs Minister as saying. Mr Papandreou also revealed that, during the informal meeting on Kastelorizo, he had asked his EU colleagues to present a list of their foreign policy priorities to the presidency (see EUROPE of 22nd May, p.6).
