EP calls on political prisoners to be released, particularly two from the unified Buddist church

Strasbourg, 15/05/2003 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday, the European Parliament called on the Vietnamese authorities to respect religious freedom and "re-establish the legitimate status of the Unified Buddhist Church of Vietnam (UBCV) and other non-recognised churches". It also welcomed the recent meeting with the Vietnamese Prime Minister, Phan Van Khai and the leader of the non-official Unified Buddhist Church, calling on the government to continue the process of dialogue.
