Brussels, 25/04/2003 (Agence Europe) - After the United States at the beginning of the month, it is now Australia's turn to protest about various European geographical indications such as Parma ham, by demanding consultations at the WTO on the subject. Australia is opposed to certain European protection rules, which it sees as discriminatory, on the following products: cheeses, beer, processed meat, fruit and cork. The complaints do not touch upon the sensitive area of wines and spirits (such as French Champagne or Italian Chianti), on which the EU and Australia are attempting to conclude an agreement on oenological practises and the protection of various European denominations (EUROPE of 27 March 2003). Australia could request a dispute settlement panel at the WTO following the consultation period (60 days maximum). The United States has already requested WTO consultations on this subject, as they claim the EU is violating WTO rules by treating various imported products (such as Florida oranges or Idaho potatoes) less favourably than European Community products.
