THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/cyprus

03/04/2003 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission takes note of this proposal. It continues to think that it is preferable that a resolution is obtained in the context of the UN and that it attends the Security Council meeting planned for 9 April before making any comments. These are the words of Commissioner Verheugen's spokesperson, Jean-Christophe Filori, who was answering questions about the six point proposal of Rauf Denktash, which he had just submitted to Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos. Mr Denktash, who informed the press that his suggestions could by a "catalyst" for reaching a mutually acceptable resolution, is proposing: the freedom of circulation of goods and persons beyond the "Green Line" that separates North and South Cyprus (but he is requesting in exchange the lifting of economic sanctions against the North), Greek Cypriot access to Varosha, near Famagusta, the setting up of a reconciliation committee for promoting "understanding, tolerance and mutual respect" between the two sides.
