GENERAL NEWS / (eu) eu/1 april

01/04/2003 (Agence Europe) - Generally seen as dull, the European institutions and their representatives can occasionally be light-hearted, at least on 1 April. The Greek Presidency of the EU announced the abolition of the Stability Pact linking the Euro-zone countries on its web-site on Tuesday morning, but it was quickly withdrawn, apparently due to fears that certain economic operators would fall for it. On a lighter note, the European Commission published two press releases: one on a proposed ban on "single-hulled eggs (a reference to the ban on single-hulled ships, the French word for 'hull' also meaning 'shell'- translator's note)", the other announcing a new system of quotas for accredited journalists at the European institutions, due to the risks of information services becoming swamped by the arrival of press representatives from the ten new Member States.
