Brussels, 01/04/2003 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission will this Wednesday authorise the creation of Sky Italia, born out of the merger between Stream, audiovisuals subsidiary jointly owned by the Newscorp group (owned by businessman Rupert Murdoch), Telecom Italia, and the pay-TV operator Telepiù. Last December, the Commission expressed its reservations as to the creation of a new pay-TV platform in Italy, because there was a risk of the operation creating a dominant position, and decided to expand its enquiry. According to Italian agency Ansa, the Commission accepted the commitments undertaken by the parties, particularly to limit the duration of contracts to be signed by the new entity with providers of programmes broadcast exclusively, and the option for cheaper customer access to older material (see EUROPE of 19 March, p.18).
