Turkish ambassador assures Prodi and Robertson that Ankara won't launch military operation

Brussels, 25/03/2003 (Agence Europe) - During an informal breakfast on Tuesday that brought together the President of the European Commission, Romano Prodi, Secretary General of NATO, Lord Robertson and ambassadors from member countries of NATO, the Turkish ambassador to NATO, declared that the armed forces of his country had no intention of taking military action in northern Iraq. On Tuesday afternoon, Reijo Kemppinnen, the Commission's spokesperson, declared that "Whatever the size or nature of their possible military presence on the Iraq side of the border, they are only there for humanitarian purposes to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe". The spokesperson also added that, "Needless to say, we expect them to respect this fully". Mr Kemppinnen also indicated that Lord Robertson and most ambassadors present at the breakfast expressed a wish for the EU to play a stronger and more active role in NATO.
