THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/spring summit

24/03/2003 (Agence Europe) - The high representative for CFSP, Javier Solana was in Berlin on Monday, where he met chancellor Schroeder and foreign and defence ministers Joschka Fischer and Peter Struck. Solana, who received Berlin the Manfred Woerner Award, said in a speech on that occasion that according to him "Last week's summit marked a kind of turning point". The Fifteen, he noted, recognised that the EU "must recover its determination faced with challenges - humanitarian, reconstruction, political stability - that are expected of us". "If we refuse to take these on together, these challenges will not disappear", Solana warned, welcoming, moreover, the recent proposals of president Bush of implementing the roadmap of the Quartet, noting: "the roadmap was a European proposal, and I'm encouraged that, at this time, the United States should have accepted to move forward in the peace process in the Middle East multilaterally, together with the EU".
