24/03/2003 (Agence Europe) - Peter Hain, the representative of the British government at the European Convention said in a debate in London last Thursday that events in Iraq had confirmed the need to reform the CFSP, but that "reports of its demise were wrong and unhelpful". "There is a future for CFSP, and we are working in the European convention to identify how we might develop a serious and credible EU global role beyond the one that it has on aid and trade", while adding: "The UK. Like other Member States, will not accept any shift from the intergovernmental nature of the CFSP; nor is there much sense in extending qualified majority voting to foreign policy". While noting that "we need greater coherence", the secretary of State for Wales considered that "merging the posts of the Council's High Representative for CFSP and the Commissioner for external relations "could help us to achieve that".
