Lisbon, 28/02/2003 (Agence Europe) - According to the AFP Agency in Lisbon, European Commissioner for Enlargement Günter Verheugen, who was on visit to Portugal, spoke of the problem of relocating firms to Eastern Europe. He was speaking to a committee of the Portuguese parliament. Such relocation arises from the globalisation process and has nothing to do with enlargement, the Commissioner said in response to questions on the subject of recent cases of Portuguese firms that have relocated. If the countries concerned were not future members of the European Union, there would be frantic competition between them to attract foreign capital, Mr Verheugen said. He added that as soon as accession is effective, unfair competition would come to an end.
