Move to suspend Balkan sugar export discounts

Brussels, 28/02/2003 (Agence Europe) - Next week the European Commission is expected to approve a proposal from services Commissioner Franz Fischler to suspend certain white sugar export discounts from Western Balkan countries (Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, the Union of Serbia and Montenegro, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia) in order to restrict fraud in these countries. the Commission had already warned Community operators of these cases of fraud in June 2002. The Commission (DG Taxation and Customs Union, in agreement with DG Agriculture) will then attack the second side to the problem, the preferential system to the Balkans. OLAF and the Greek authorities have therefore discovered that European operators have exported sugar from the Balkans and subsequently benefited from discounts, which they had then exported to the EU without paying customs duties.
