Brussels, 26/02/2003 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday, the European Commission discussed its annual policy strategy for 2004 and post-2006 financial perspectives, but put off the adoption of Communications on these issues until next week (see Europe of 25 February, p.12). Noting that 2004 will be a historically important year for the EU with three vital events (enlargement of the EU to ten new Member States on 1 May 2004 once the process of ratifying the Accession Treaties is complete, the election of up to 682 Members of the European Parliament in June 2004 and the prospects of a new Constitutional Treaty), the Commission has identified three priority policies for 2004; 1) the accession of ten new Member States (the EU and its new Member States respecting their legal obligations vis-à-vis EU acquis and full implementation of the administrative reform of the Commission; 2) security and stability; and 3) sustainable growth.
