A priori, Franz Fischler says Italy's amnesty for fined dairy farmers is illegal

Brussels, 21/02/2003 (Agence Europe) - On the fringes of Thursday's Agriculture Council, Commissioner Franz Fischler said that the recent amnesty granted by the Italian government to dairy farmers fined by the Commission for exceeding milk quotas (see Europe of 15 February, p.12) was illegal. Fischler said his services had sent Italy a request for information about the decision and the Commission was waiting for a reply before making a formal judgment.
