Brussels, 12/02/2003 (Agence Europe) - Christa Randzio-Plath the Chair of the European Parliament's Committee on Economic and Monetary affairs is unsure whether the European Central Bank's recommendation of reform of the Governing Council, "has been made in the appropriate direction" (see EUROPE 5 February p 14). According to Ms Randzio-Plath, "its very complicated rotation system" puts too much emphasis on "national representation inside the ECB" which is "dangerous and contradicts the monetary policy integration". The Committee Chair also warned that this , "can lead to situations where coalitions of National Central Bank Governors fight against each other to the detriment of the euro area as a whole. It can also awaken nationalist sentiment". The German Social Democrat wants to see, "an ambitious and pro-European solution…not so much based on representation and rotation, but on a system allowing more power and more weight to the executive board while reducing the possibility that national central bank governors consider themselves as representatives of their countries when voting". The MEP pointed out that they would be discussing this issue with Wim Duisenberg on 17 February.
