Brussels, 07/02/2003 (Agence Europe) - Javier Solana, EU's High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy commented on 6 February on the adoption by the United Nations Security Council of Resolution 1464 concerning the Ivory Coast. He said (unofficial translation): "As a witness to the Marcoussis agreements, present at the Conference of Paris on the Ivory Coast, I am delighted by the unanimous adoption of Security Council Resolution 1464, which adopts the Linas-Marcoussis agreement approved at the Conference of Heads of State, and which calls on all the political forces of the Ivory Coast to apply it in full and without delay. The EU, which belongs to the Follow-Up Committee on the agreements, has said it will make its contractual relations, including substantial aid, available to help this task of national reconciliation to bring about the end of a conflict that has caused too many victims and human rights violations, as the United Nations underlines. President Gbagbo's speech to the nation is awaited by all his citizens but also by the whole international community. Peace is necessary, on the basis of the agreements signed. The government of the appointed Prime Minister, Seydou Diarra, is to be formed on this basis. The EU expresses this view forcefully as do the African Union, the United States and the Security Council".
