Brussels, 07/02/2003 (Agence Europe) - David Heathcote-Amory, representative of the British Parliament criticised Valéry Giscard d'Estaing, his presidium and "selective memory" in the drafting of the first draft Articles in the future Constitutional treaty (see EUROPE yesterday pp 5-7). According to Mr Heathcote-Amory the selective use of the work group conclusions and those arranging them has led the editors of the draft Articles to end up with an EU that is even less democratic and distant from the ordinary voter. The MEP believes that they have forgotten all that goes in the direction of "less Europe" towards a scribbling out for more integration. Jens-Peter Bonde, President of the EDD Parliamentary group and a member of the "Forum for Democracy" which was created at the Convention (and which seeks less Europe), charged that "It's a one-way street to an EU State. This will drag us towards levels of integration that are deeper than those in the USA". The Danish MEP also complained that the proposals on citizenship are a "passport toward a country called Europe".
