French aid to combat water pollution is approved

Brussels, 06/02/2003 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission has decided not to raise any objection to the French system of environmental protection aid. The system aims to strengthen the processing of waste from industrial activity into waterways and public networks, to reduce the production of waste that is hazardous for water, and to reduce polluting waste to be treated by direct intervention on industrial processes. Implemented by the water authorities, the scheme provides for investment aid to be attributed in water decontamination provisions that may amount to up to 30% of the cost engendered by such provisions. SMEs and companies located in assisted regions may benefit from higher aid. The Commission has examined the system in the light of the Community State aid framework for the protection of the environment and has concluded that the scheme did comply with the criteria.
