Brussels, 06/02/2003 (Agence Europe) - The Commission has decided approve a planned UK investment subsidy in favour of Clydeboyd Ltd. As part of the Freight Facilities Grant Scheme, the aid intends to encourage modal shift from road to water transport by providing a larger berth and enhanced freight handling facilities at Corparch Pier, near Fort William in Scotland. The Commission had several doubts regarding the necessity and proportionality of the aid for the realisation of the project, as well as its possible impact on existing transport infrastructures in the area but on analysis of the information provided, the Commission concluded that the subsidy is necessary for the execution of the project and the environmental benefit of the project will considerably outweigh the potential impact on competition.
