06/02/2003 (Agence Europe) - The United States' current attempts to renegotiate with certain Member States on the subject of the "open sky" bilateral agreements that were denounced by the EU's Court of Justice are an obvious act of scorn for European law and must cease, Ingo Schmitt, CDU member, affirms in a press release (see EUROPE of 1 February, p.10 on the subject of the letter from the Director General for Transport, François Lamoureux, calling on Member States not to renegotiate such agreements). These agreements finally entail serious competition distortion, the MEP states, considering that a united European front in this affair could only be maintained if a strong Commission leads negotiation with the Americans.
