Portugal suggests postponing 5 April Summit

Lisbon, 29/01/2003 (Agence Europe) - Portuguese Foreign Minister Antonio Martins da Cruz told the press, according to AFP, that "for now" it would be wise to postpone the EU/Africa Summit, scheduled for 5 April in Lisbon, due to differences between European Union Member States over Zimbabwe (see EUROPE of 29 January, p.6, for the inability of the EU Council to find a solution to the problem of sanctions against the Mugabe regime at international meetings). The Minister stipulated he had "very clear indications" according to which, if President Mugabe takes part in the Summit, several Heads of State and Government of the European Union would be absent (this is what at least the United Kingdom and the Netherlands have let it be known). African countries like Nigeria and Sudan, on the other hand, would boycott the Summit if Robert Mugabe were not there.
