29/01/2003 (Agence Europe) - Representatives of the Churches discussed with the Greek Deputy Minister for European Affairs, Tassos Giannitsis, on Tuesday concerning the priorities of the Greek EU Council Presidency. According to the COMECE (Commission of the Bishops' Conference of the European Community) discussions focused on: EU enlargement, the European Convention (the representatives of the Churches asked for a religious reference to be included in the future European Constitutional Treaty), the contribution that Churches hope to make toward preparing the EU/Balkans Summit scheduled for 21 June in Thessalonika, bioethics, social policy, immigration and education. The Churches' delegation also expressed the hope that a peaceful solution would be found to the conflict in Iraq. The delegation was composed of Bishop Athanassios Chatzopoulos of Achaïa, representative of the Church of Greece to the European Union, Reverend Rüdiger Noll, Director of the Church and Society Commission of the Conference of the European Churches (CEC), and Mr Stefan Lunte, Assistant to the Secretary General of the COMECE.
