07/01/2003 (Agence Europe) - The work on harmonised electoral procedure for European elections drafted by one of the main players in revision of the 1976 Act, which was completed on 12 June 2002, former European Parliament Vice-President George Anastassopoulos (EPP, Greece), has appeared in English with a preface by Greek Socialist Dimitris Tsatsos. "The Debate on the System of Electing the Members of the European Parliament" goes back over the history of the European electoral system and covers the turning point represented by elections with direct universal suffrage, since June 1979. It also devotes a large place to the introduction of proportional voting and to the many obstacles that have had to be overcome in order to come progressively closer to a common electoral procedure. The work is published with the support of the Robert Schumann Foundation by A. Sakkoulas (ISBN 960-15-0808-2) in Athens and by Bruylant (ISBN 2-8027-1629-8) in Brussels.
