Valéry Giscard d'Estaing wins 2003 prize

Brussels, 16/12/2002 (Agence Europe) - The next Charlemagne Prize will be awarded to Chairman of the European Convention Valéry Giscard d'Estaing, the managers of the prize have announced, pointing out the contribution made by VGE to the creation of the European monetary system and his close cooperation, when President of France, with Chancellor Schmidt. The prize managers said that they associated the award of the prize with the hope that with a common constitution the EU could pull closer together and that the Franco-German pair would continue to be the motor of European integration.

The Prize has been awarded since 1950 by the city of Aachen in Germany (also known as Aix-la-Chapelle). It will be awarded to VGE in May 2003. Past winners include Winston Churchill, Jacques Delors, the population of Luxembourg and the euro.
