16/12/2002 (Agence Europe) - The organisation Friends of the Earth - Europe has launched a campaign to abolish the Euratom Treaty. The 1957 Treaty on the atomic energy community is "out of date, undemocratic and biased in favour of the nuclear option to the detriment of other energy options", says its director Martin Rocholl. The environmental protection organisation, which is represented in over thirty countries, calls on other representatives of civil society to sign a declaration entitled "Abolish Euratom", to be presented early next yea to the European Convention. The Convention should , according to Friends of the Earth, examine alternatives to the Euratom treaty, the only treaty not to have been amended in fifty years.. According to them, any new text on energy will have to integrate the principle of sustainable development.
