10/12/2002 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday, the Commission is to adopt proposals detailing the agreement recently concluded with the United States and Canada on setting up quotas for cereals (see EUROPE of 14 November, p.13). The aim of the mandate granted to the Commission was to find a solution to slow down the inflow into the EU of low-price cereals originating in the Black Sea (Ukraine and Russia). The Commission will confirm the introduction of the following quotas: 2,981,600 tonnes low and medium quality tender wheat (572,000 for the United States, 38,000 for Canada, the rest for the other third countries); 500,000 tonnes of brewing barley and 300,000 tonnes for other barley. No quota is scheduled for high quality wheat or durum wheat. Negotiations are continuing with Moscow and Kiev, which are not targeted by the agreement.
