Brussels, 20/11/2002 (Agence Europe) - While the French group Schneider is reconsidering the possibility of merging with Legrand following the European Court of Justice's decision to break the Commission's veto on this operation, the Legrand directors have decided to apply for summary judgement against Schneider before the court in Nanterre. It considers it was not sufficiently involved in negotiations that resumed with the European Commission. Sources familiar with the issue state that Legrand intends to officially file its arguments with the European Commission, preferring a sale of shares to the Wendel consortium which, says Legrand, would make it possible to avoid asset-stripping after sale in which Legrand might pay the heaviest price, in order to meet the requirements of European competition rules. The proposal of merger in the current state of affairs already provides for the sale of assets worth EUR 480 million, mainly affecting the activities of Legrand. Others should follow. The Commission is to specify its intentions by the end of the month. (See EUROPE of 23 October, p.10).
