Brussels, 18/11/2002 (Agence Europe) - The Swedish Social Democrat party gave its approval, on Saturday, for a referendum to be held on adopting the euro. This decision will allow Prime Minister Göran Persson to set a date for consultation, most likely in autumn 2003. Mr Persson admitted that the result of the referendum would no doubt be "tight". He did not dare predict a victory for the "yes" side despite the latest surveys in favour. Opponents to giving up the Swedish currency, including several Social Democrat ministers, initiated their campaign last week, arguing that the kingdom has managed quite well without the euro over recent years.
