THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/pes

15/11/2002 (Agence Europe) - The Council of the Party of European Socialists, chaired by Robin Cook, adopted a "Warsaw Declaration" in which it sets out a certain number of political priorities. Meeting in the Polish capital, the Socialist and Social-Democrat leaders placed emphasis on democracy, solidarity and social justice, sustainable development and security against crime, and considered that efforts to tackle world poverty should include "an authoritative follow-up to the Brandt Report for the new century". As for the future of social-democracy, the declaration stresses the need to draw lessons from recent elections and to "ensure that we leave no place in the modern Europe where the extreme Right can gain a political foothold". In the declaration, the PES pledges to assist sister parties in preparing for EU membership and fighting the European Parliament elections in 2004. (PES site: http://www.pes.org ).
