11/10/2002 (Agence Europe) - With the adoption of the report by Giuseppe Nisticò (Forza Italia), the European Parliament approved, with a single amendment, the Council's common position concerning the 23rd amendment of the 1976 Council Directive relating to restrictions on the marketing and use of certain substances classified as carcinogens, mutagens or substances toxic to reproduction. The amendment introduces a provision that "the Commission should submit as soon as possible a proposal to prohibit the use of products containing such substances, when there is scientific evidence that they are released from these products leading to exposure of the general public". The Parliament thus makes its position more flexible in order to reach a compromise with the Council. At first reading, its amendment did not mention the need to have scientific proof of public exposure.
