Brussels, 02/10/2002 (Agence Europe) - On the occasion of a seminar organised with Caroline Jackson, Chairperson of the European Parliament's Environment Committee, European Commissioner Margot Wallström exposed the illegal and mismanaged landfill sites in the EU. The seminar entitled "Name, Shame and Fame" aimed to heighten public awareness of the effects of poor implementation of Community law on landfill sites, which are potential sources of atmospheric emissions, smell and pollution of the soil and water if they are badly managed. Ms Wallström recalled that, further to many complaints from the public, the Commission has taken legal measures against 36 landfill sites in 7 Member States. Greece and Spain are in the lead with ten cases each. They are followed by Italy (8), Ireland (5), the United Kingdom, France and Germany (one case each). Furthermore, the Commission initiated proceedings against six Member States (Belgium, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg and the United Kingdom) because they did not adopt or notify complete national legislation transposing the 1999 directive on the disposal of waste before the deadline of July 2001.
