Brussels, 02/10/2002 (Agence Europe) - The Commission has decided to open formal investigation procedure on investment subsidies in favour of Clydebord Ltd from the United Kingdom. In the context of the Freight Facilities Grant Scheme, the aid intends to encourage modal shift from road to water transport by providing a larger berth and enhanced freight handling facilities at Corparch (Scotland). The Commission doubts whether a State contribution of 85% to the construction of a larger berth and enhanced freight handling facilities is necessary to allow the improvement of the Port of Corparch. The development of activities shifting traffic from road to other modes could be compatible with European State aid rules, but the Commission normally considers State aid beyond 50% aid intensity for transport infrastructure as not compatible with competition rules.
