27/09/2002 (Agence Europe) - On 29 September, Serbs are called upon to elect their new president of the Republic. Eleven candidates are standing, among whom: Vojislav Kostunica, current President of former Yugoslavia, Miroljub Labus, Deputy Prime Minister of the Federal Government and close to Zoran Djindjic (Prime Minister of Serbia and political opponent of Mr. Kostunica), Vojislav Seselj, ultra-nationalist leader of the Radical party (SRS) backed by Slobodan Milosevic. According to the Robert Schuman Foundation, Vojislav Kostunica is said to be a little ahead of his main rival Miroljub Labus, whereas the Serb candidate Vojislav Seselj has seen his score climb in voting intentions. The opposition between Vojislav Kostunica and Zoran Djindjic is the mean political cleavage in Serbia, the first being the more nationalist of the two, the second wanting to undertake major political and economic reforms to enable Serbia to apply for EU integration.
