Aid to North Korea, Vietnam and Laos

Brussels, 27/09/2002 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission has recently adopted three humanitarian aid decisions, as follows: EUR 730,000 to Laos to help displaced vulnerable people and possible victims of resettlement policies (water and sanitation systems, the construction of an access road, the distribution of hygiene kits and education in mine-awareness). An underlying aim is to boost ethnic minorities' access to a sustainable livelihood as an alternative to resettlement; - EUR 300,000 to North Korea, to meet the immediate needs of 22,500 people after the torrential rain (and to replenish emergency relief stocks); - and EUR 245,000 to Vietnam for the purchase of additional doses of the diphtheria-pertussis-tetanus vaccine.
