Brussels, 27/09/2002 (Agence Europe) - In response to criticism from Commissioner Pedro Solbes on the in-disciplined approach to the French budget for 2003 and the lack of control over the deficit, the French Prime Minister, Jean-Pierre Raffarin, stressed the fact that France was one of the countries that did the most in defence matters within the current uncertain international context (see EUROPE yesterday p 10). The Prime Minister pointed out in a television interview that, "the world is very dangerous… for the military equipping of France and giving confidence and strength to our armies…When I compare with other European countries, I don't see other European countries, except the United Kingdom, make as concerted an effort as us". The Head of the French government pointed out that France was currently one of those that did the most for the defence of the French people, France and also Europe. He indicated that he wanted to participate in the Stability Pact as requested by Brussels, which he confirmed was the right thing to do but pointed to what France was doing and which subsequently needed acknowledging.
