Brigitte Langenhagen reproaches rapporteur for reform for dragging work out

Brussels, 17/09/2002 (Agence Europe) - CDU member Brigitte Langenhagen, Vice-Chair of the European Parliament's Committee on Fisheries, expressed indignation about the "abstruse proposals" with which some MEPs seek to delay the necessary reform of fisheries policy. In a press release, she also states that the hearing of Member States' representatives organised at the Fisheries Committee at the rapporteur's insistence was just a waste of time. She said that she could quite easily have played the role of all of them as the basic positions of Member States are, at the end of the day, known to us all. She denounces the role played by the "self-baptised "Friends of Fishing"" that she accuses of lacking responsibility when it comes to the risk of depleting marine resources. The German MEP said she also feared for the independence of MEPs, if the rapporteur simply repeats the instructions of his friends at the Spanish Ministry (an allusion to the member of Partido Popular, Daniel Varela Suanzes Carpegna, who is working with three co-rapporteurs, Salvador Jové Peres, Spanish member of the GUE, French sovereignist Dominique Souchet and Danish Liberal Niels Busk). She continued by saying that neither is it very democratic for her to be invited by a letter from the Spanish Prime Minister to tow the Iberian line.
