Brussels, 17/09/2002 (Agence Europe) - The European commissioner responsible for competition, Mario Monti, expressed his intention in Copenhagen on Tuesday of sending a letter to the German Government to ask it to communicate details on the 400 million euro loan that Berlin decided to grant MobilCom through two State-owned banks (see yesterday's EUROPE page 14). "What we have read in the newspapers indicates that two public bodies are behind the loans granted to MobilCom, so naturally the Commission would need to know the conditions under which the loan was or would be granted in order to assess whether it involves state subsidies or it is a normal market operation", said the Commissioner, stipulating that "we expect to be notified and we will shortly be sending a request for information from the German authorities".
