Brussels, 20/08/2002 (Agence Europe) - On behalf of the European Union, the Danish Presidency has made the following declaration, "Representatives of Donor missions and UN Agencies in Khartoum welcome the recent progress at the IGAD peace talks in Machakos, Kenya, the meeting between President Bashir and SPLM Chairman Garang in Kampala, and the reconvening of the peace talks in Kenya on August 12. However, we are concerned about the serious humanitarian situation that exists in parts of southern Sudan, due to continuing military operations and lack of humanitarian access. We urge the government of Sudan and SPLM to make a dramatic gesture on the humanitarian agencies to match the progress in the peace talks, by allowing relevant humanitarian agencies to have immediate free and unimpeded access to all populations in need. We note that both parties have already agreed to do this when they signed the 15 December 1999 TCHA Agreement on Implementation of Principles Governing the Protection and Provision of Humanitarian Assistance to War Affected Civilians. We call on the parties to put this agreement into immediate effect. The Central and Eastern European countries associated with the European Union, the associated countries of Cyprus, Malta and Turkey, and Liechtenstein and Norway, EFTA countries members of the European Economic Area, align themselves with this declaration."
